Dragons

In the earliest days of the first Age, when the gods were creating all of the races, Correllan asked Mystra for her help in creating a truly magical creature. Giving the creatures an eternalitt that exceeded his Fey elves. Correllan added a physical strength and mental capacities far exceeding anything else created. Then he wrapped them in a skin harder than the hardest metal. Mystra saw these magnificent beings and saw what she had hoped for, something to which she could impart some of her power over the Weave. And with her final touch the Twelve we’re formed: Gold & Red. Silver & Blue. Bronze & Green. Brass & Black. Copper & White. Platinum & Multi-hued. The last pair being the only males.

Ever envious of Correllan and his work, Gruumsh saw these great creations and wanted them for himself. So at the time of the first mating he stirred the great passions within them and fighting broke out amongst the dragons. By the time Correllan and Mystra could calm them, the males were dead and only the females remained. With their desires for procreation inflamed and no way to fulfill it the dragons grew sullen and disconsolate. Seizing his opportunity, Gruumsh began wooing the dragons with promises of a male and children. Deceived by the evil good the chromatic dragons abandoned Mystra and Correllan to follow Gruumsh. Angered by this betrayal Mystra cursed the dragons to forever be locked in their natural form, thereby never to have offspring, or so she thought. She rewarded those metallic daughters who had stayed faithful with an ability to take on the form of any of the other races so that through this form they might get pregnant and have children. Never one to be thwarted, Gruumsh fulfilled his promise to his dragons by creating, with Shar’s help, the purple dragon. The male’s natural form is that of a dragonborn shade. When called upon by the other dragons he temporarily is granted a form comparable to theirs so that mating can take place.

Once impregnated the dams lay their eggs, usually 3 – 18 at a time. These eggs will then hatch within a few months giving life to a new brood. The eggs either hatch into a dragonborn of the same as the dam or a dragonspawn . Dragonspawn are similar to their mothers with the exception that they lack the eternal gift from Correllan, meaning that they usually live no longer than their dragonborn brethren. Dragons mate once a year. Dragonborn give live birth to children of the same race as one or both of the parents non draconic lineage. Dragonspawn eggs typically hatch into other dragonspawn, however there is a high rate of infertility in these eggs 50% chance no birth.
